Those unfamiliar with window tint may not know the difference between computer cut films and custom cut film, and that’s unfortunate because once you’re aware of the difference, computer cut is simply not acceptable if you take pride in your car or truck. You may be wondering why computer cut tint film would be the inferior option since it implies a high degree of precision, and we’re here to give you the answer in two parts.
Windows that come out of the frame.
There are many vehicles equipped with side windows that come out of the frame when rolled down. In the up position, a significant portion of the glass is inside the window frame. When a computer-cut piece of tint film is applied to this window, it may look perfectly fine rolled up, but once the window is rolled down there will typically be wide gaps around the glass because the precut film did not take into account the side and top edges of the window that are recessed in the frame.
Sometimes the glass may not come entirely out of the frame when rolled down, but will still shift a little bit. By custom cutting the film, this shift can be anticipated by leaving extra film at the edges when cutting a pattern for the window.
Window gaskets are not all the same.
Weather sealing on windows means rubber gaskets around the edges, and these gaskets are not all alike – some may be installed slightly tighter than others by the manufacturer, and that means a one-size-fits-all computer cut tint film will end up having gaps on some windows. Some computer cut films are more accurate than others, but will never compare to custom tint. With custom cut tint film, patterns for each window are cut individually to ensure a proper fit that goes to the edges, leaving no gaps like the examples below.
As you can tell from these examples of computer cut film, it’s not even close. Those unsightly gaps are the hallmark of computer cut film. Even the most professional of tint installers couldn’t make this look good.
