As the weather continues to get colder, the experts at DeDona Auto Glass have a few pieces of advice to follow to protect your auto glass from damage during the harsh winter months.
Do not pour hot water on your windshield in order to remove ice. If there are any cracks or chips in your glass windshield, the vast change in temperature can cause that crack or chip to expand. The sudden temperature change can also create cracks all by itself. Instead, try covering your windshield at night, use a de-icing wiper fluid, or simple let the vehicle warm up so you can more easily remove any ice.
Do not use improper ice scraping equipment that was never intended to come in contact with the glass (such as something with a sharp edge) because the wrong tool could easily scratch the windshield, impairing your vision and resulting in the need for chip repair or even replacing the glass if the damage is too extensive. Make certain you have a proper ice scraping tool in your vehicle at all times so that it’s there when you need it.
Do not delay changing your wiper blades when they begin to lose their effectiveness. The effects of sunlight, ozone and oxidation cause the rubber blades of your wipers to deteriorate. Also, as windshields age, they get pitted from road debris, dirt and sand, and this causes wiper blades to wear faster. When your windshield wipers leave behind lines and streaks or no longer move smoothly or quietly across the glass, it’s time for wiper blade replacement.
Do not ever hesitate to get cracks or chips repaired! Keep in mind that only shorter cracks and relatively small chips can be repaired. As you continue to drive, the stress on the frame and continual changes in temperature can quickly cause the damage to worsen. Repairing minor chips and cracks in your windshield early helps ensure that the integrity of the glass is restored and gets you off the hook for a more expensive replacement.
